Rented Accommodation

Most of us will live in rented accommodation at some point in our lives, usually between leaving home and buying our own property.

Renting is often a very rewarding situation. Having left the confines of the family home, with noone to answer to it can be a time of considerable freedom and great fun. However for anyone moving to a new town, or moving in with strangers it can be a stressful time, finding somewhere to live and adapting to other people's routines. With our brief guide we hope to help you find somewhere that's right for you.

Looking for rented accommodation
There are various ways of finding somewhere to live. These include:
  • Ads in shop windows, and on noticeboards in supermarkets, community centres and university/college.
  • Local newspapers and magazines.
  • Online resources, such as Flatmate World and Flatmate Click
  • If you are a student your university should have an accommodation office to provide assisitance.
  • Local councils should have an advice centre with lists of accommodation available to rent.
Accommodation Types
There are a variety of accommodation options available to you
  • Bedsits:
A bedsit usually consists of one room furnished as a bedroom and as a living room with cooking facilities provided in the room. A bathroomis usually shared between bedsits.
  • Houseshare/Flatshare:
A shared house/flat is usually rented by three or more tenants who will share payment of utility bills. Each flatmate will have their own bedroom and share the kitchen, living room and bathroom with the other tenants. Ideal for those with a small budget and who enjoy communal living.
  • Self-contained flats
Self-contained flats have their own kitchen, living room and bathroom facilities and tend to be more expensive.
Things to consider
When deciding where to live you have to have a realisitic outlook and understnad what you can reasonably expect for your budget. Consider the following:
  • Your income
If you have a low wage your options may be very limited. Be wary about raising your expectations too high. However, if your income is sufficienlty low the local council may offer assistance in the form of housing benefit.
  • Location:
More attractive parts of town will be more expensive. In addition you will need to consider likely transport requirement and expense.
  • Local services
Do you need shops nearby? What about access to good transport links? You may want to make sure you arn't too far away from your local needs. But you should realise that you may have to suffer increased rent for the pleasure.
