Hostel Accomodation |
 |
| For many travellers and those on a
tight budget hostel accommodation is a cheap and easy option. You may have to share your
room. But if you don't mind that having to mix with others, a hostel could be your ideal
place to stay. |
|
There are two basic groups of hostels - 'official' hostels run by the
Youth Hostel Association (YHA) and privately-run hostels.

YHA hostels
|
The YHA (SYHA in Scotland) provides the majority of hostel accomodation in the United Kingdom.
The YHA was established to provide affordable accommodation for young independent travellers.
They offered a different type of accommodation where rooms were dormitories with bunk beds,
where you may have to share bathroom facilities with up to 30 other guests,
where you had to meet a midnight curfew or face having to sleep in the street and
where you were at the mercy of the noise of the other room mates.
Modern hostel accommodation is much improved. Although some hotels have kept their dormitories and
shared bathroom facilities, the dorms are now usually much smaller (for 6-8 people) and many also
offer family rooms (four beds) and rooms for couples. With such developments the age range of
guests has increased greatly. This in turn has also led to most hostels getting rid of
(or pushing back) their curfews. All this makes modern YHA hostels ideal budget accommodation for
all budget travellers.

Private hostels
|
Private hostels are essentially independently-owned hostels, similar to those run by the YHA.
Independent hostel accommodation differs very little from that provided by the YHA. Room size and
facilities tend to be of similar quality. The only slight variation is that, these hostels can be
very slighty cheaper. Also, there is frequently no curfew.
